THE WITFUL WOLVES
Week of March 20-24
Students should be bringing home their science/SS binders daily. We had a class discussion that studying could be quick in the car on the way to practice or at the dinner table. In 5th grade we need to study. Many content vocabulary words are being introduced for the first time this year.
Please remember to sign the pink assessment card and return.
Please sign and return one copy of your child's Interim Report Card, which went home on Friday.
Paper homework due Friday (March 24th). IXl lesson for the week. These are found under the Virginia SOL link. 5.13 Classify quadrilaterals (5-BB.4).
There has been an increase in students forgetting notes for dismissal changes/clubs. Just a friendly reminder your child needs a letter every time the club meets. It is best that it is sent in as a written note, just in case I am out and cannot get to my email to forward on to the office.
Thank you to all who could come out for Pioneer Day. The children enjoyed showing off all their hard work and information they have learned during this past unit.

THIS WEEKS FOCUS
This week in reading the students will begin learning about Non-Fiction Text Structures. Text features include all the components of a story or article that are not the main body of text. These include the table of contents, index, glossary, headings, bold words, sidebars, pictures and captions, and labeled diagrams. When students enter the intermediate grades, they are required to read more textbooks and informational texts to learn, but reading textbooks and informational texts can be difficult for students due to the higher level vocabulary and content. In addition to these complexities, expository nonfiction also contains numerous text features that supplement and present important content that the student must read in order to fully comprehend. However, students often ignore these essential text features, even though they have been taught their importance.
Your 5th grader will work on improving their Dictionary skills this week. Dictionaries can be really helpful when you are reading because they help you find out the meaning of words you don't know. However, many students struggle with applying their knowledge of abc order when using guide words to locate the words in the dictionary.
Spelling focus: Were/ we’re/where
This week and week in Math we will review all the geometry concepts and skills taught during this unit in preparation of the end of the unit test
End of Unit Test Friday, March 24th
The students will review the Midwest this week. A study guide/practice test will be completed on Monday and sent home to study. Please be on the look out of this to review at home with your 5th grader.
